Celebrating our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Sunday June 5th celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a very English afternoon tea at the Village Hall.

Kirtling and Upend Platinum Jubilee Tea Party

Nearly one hundred residents of Kirtling and Upend celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Sunday 5th June 2022 with a Tea Party held at Kirtling Village Hall. The Hall looked very festive, being festooned with Union Flags and pictures of the Queen, and the tables were also decorated accordingly. A large spread was provided for the adults comprising sandwiches, home-made scones with jam, clotted cream and strawberries, cakes and a magnificent Jubilee cake decorated with summer fruit to create a Union Flag, whilst the children who attended were all given a special picnic box. Tea flowed and the licensed bar did a roaring trade.

Later, the sixteen children were entertained in a side room with crown making, colouring-in with a Royal theme, ‘Pin the Jewel on the Crown’ and a lucky dip, whilst the adults were given the answers to a themed Royal quiz set by Alison Pascoe. David Foister then played his orchestral keyboard to a rousing rendition of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, together with appropriate flag-waving, following which the Loyal Toast was proposed by Lord Fairhaven and both verses of the National Anthem were sung (words for verse 2 were provided!).

The children’s crowns were judged and prizes were presented to the winning ‘King’ and ‘Queen’,  before each child was given a special Kirtling and Upend Jubilee mug, with all other households also receiving one. Lord Fairhaven judged the adults’ most  patriotic outfit and presented the winner, Jackie Staunton, with  bottle of bubbly in recognition of her fetching Union Flag skirt. Finally, the winning numbers for the many raffle prizes were read out before the clear-up began….

The event was made possible by funding jointly from the Parish Council and the Village Hall Committee and was the result of hard work over several months by a large team of individuals. We would like to thank the following people:

The organising committee:

Emily Davies

Ruth Dennis

Sue Faircloth

Gloria Kiteley

Tricia Lewis

Jackie and Richard Staunton

Barbara and Stewart Vause.

Many thanks also go to Brenda Marks for providing a non-stop flow of tea over several hours, John Dennis and Richard Staunton for helping to set up and clear the hall, Andrew and John Kiteley for acting as Masters of Ceremony, David Foister for playing the music, Lord Fairhaven for judging, all those who provided extra cakes and to Ann Bailey for sourcing a commemorative tree following Lord Fairhaven’s advice.

We hope that a good time was had by all!

The tree will be planted at the front of the Hall in the autumn, so watch this space for further details.
